Mealie Bread


An African Recipe

This recipe is an adaptation of the Green Mealie Bread served in South Africa.

In a 2 quart bowl, mix the first three ingredients together. Add egg and milk to form a soft dough. Spread out in greased 9-inch baking pan. Spread 2 oz. melted butter over the bread. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes or until done. Cut into squares and serve warm with butter.

  • VETKOEK - fried bread. The above Mealie Bread (with or without the corn) may be dropped by teaspoonfuls in 1/2 inch of hot oil until nicely browned.
